Whilst the first interview with Ellen Boucher gave me an invaluable professional insight, I still needed a personal account of what it is like to suffer from a traumatic brain injury.

For the documentary to have the desired impact, not only did I need to speak to someone who had suffered from such an injury, I needed them to have sustained it while sparring.

Having spent a short amount of time involved with local boxing a few years ago, I already had a contact who had seen his once promising boxing career cut short by a brain injury that he had sustained in training.

21-year-old Cam Taylor was diagnosed with five Micro-Hematomas on his frontal lobe after being knocked unconscious whilst training for the prestigious Haringey Box Cup.

Cam's story really highlighted the need for change within boxing - he spent over two minutes unconscious after taking a blow to the head, and after eventually coming round he wasn't taken to see a medical professional.

Just a week later, Cam passed out in college and was taken to hospital where he spent the next two weeks receiving treatment.

His story really reaffirmed the importance of the work that Fight Smart is doing. Not only would having a medical professional present have seen him receive the proper treatment at the time, but a more thorough testing programme may have discovered Cam's injury before it became life altering.

Cam gave some excellent quotes that will be central to the documentary, he reflected on his time in boxing and gave an honest assessment of how safe the sport is, whilst also opening up on the mental effects of suffering a serious brain injury.

To hear his interview in full, either watch the attached video below or head over to Fight Smart's brand new YouTube channel.
